So you'll hear a certain sister say that Dorks & Corks began because of her birthday, and in some respects thats true. So whats the true story behind the name Dorks & Corks?
Laura, Giulia and myself began planning for a big weekend, the Ducks were coming to Seattle to play the Huskies and it just so happened that Laura's birthday was on the Friday night before the game. We decided that in order to lure the masses (no pun intended Lev!), we were going to have to go big and that meant a pre-func that lasted close to 24 hours. So, we decided her birthday party was going to need a theme. A number of ideas were thrown out by Giulia and Laura, Pimps and Hos, White, the usual party theme ideas. But it was an idea that Erik came up with that stuck, Dorks & Corks.
We didn't have a lot of money at the time (Laura was stuck as a receptionist, I was unemployed, and Giulia was pawning wine) so it was natural to look for ways to save money. And what better place to cut corners than making our guests bring their own booze! And we didn't want to spend money, so we looked no further than the cases of wine building up around the house as our inspiration. We would create a game that not only challenged our guests to display their own wine knowedge, but also their resourcefulness.
Invitations were sent with instructions to bring a wine from a specific region. Bonnie brought a Chinese wine that was, well, pretty bad. Andrew brought a Canadian wine that was, well, pretty good. There were Missouri wines, wines with Idaho rednecks on the label, and a lot of Villa Sandi wines, a lot! But the corks weren't what made the party great, it was the dorks!
The 2007 event attracted a new breed of Dorks, this time from all over North America. We had attendees from Vancouver, BC, Idaho, Las Vegas, San Diego, Portland, Seattle, Tacoma, San Francisco, and Kansas City.
Our organization will continue its expansion in the next release of Dorks & Corks, and we hope you all stay tuned!
